TEEN WINS ESSAY PRIZE
A high school junior from Sehome High School won the first-ever Friends of the Bellingham Public Library Scholarship Essay Contest, presented April 28 at the Friends' Annual Meeting. Zoe Sheinkopf's essay, "Step Stool" described the moment she received her first library card. Her reflection on this small but meaningful event in her life earned her a $500 scholarship, intended for use towards educational expenses after high school.
"I clearly remember the feeling--not the librarian's face, or the book I was checking out, but the feeling, the moment I signed my first library card. It felt like freedom," wrote Sheinkopf.
Students submitted a typed, original essay of approximately 500 words describing how libraries have influenced their lives. Honorable mentions went to:
Bellingham High School
Sehome High School / Running Start
Squalicum High School
Details about the scholarship, including application forms, can be found on the Bellingham Public Library website (www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org) under Friends of the Library.
