We Share A Story 2009: An International Art/Literacy Connection

We Share A Story is an innovative literacy program offering students in grades 3 - 8 around the world an opportunity to share a chosen book and participate in a photography-based art project.  The book selected for We Share A Story 2009 is the 2007 Caldecott Award winner, Flotsam by David Wiesner.  We Share A Story 2009 begins April 15, 2009 and continues through October 15, 2009.

Copies of Flotsam and disposable cameras are being distributed to classrooms in 13 countries: Australia (New South Wales), Canada (New Brunswick), Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Mali, Nepal, Rwanda, USA (Washington State), Venezuela and Zambia.  Students in these classrooms will share the book and use the camera to photograph creative responses to the story.  Here are a few ideas to get started:

When the disposable cameras are full, classrooms will send the cameras back to the United States for developing.  Photos will be posted on this website and displayed publically as received.

Disposable cameras and/or digital photo CDs must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2009 and all digital entries must be submitted by October 15, 2009.  Any school or homeschool is welcome to participate; however, disposable camera processing by We Share A Story is limited to the cameras dispersed by the We Share A Story committee.

*Photograph disclaimer:  All photographs submitted to We Share A Story may be posted on the internet.  If this raises concern, please do not photograph children's faces directly, instead photograph from behind or the side.  We Share A Story reserves the right to determine which photographs are posted.

We Share A Story is made possible through funding by the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library, Rick Hartman, Rusty Reed, the Port Stephens Sister City Committee and the estate of Mary H. Douglas.
