Computers and Equipment

Bellingham Public Library locations have the following equipment available for public use:

  • Computers with access to the library catalog and research databases
  • Computers with access to the internet and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access
  • Black and white printer (15 cents per page)
  • Color printer (Central only; 50 cents per page)
  • Black and white copy machine (Central and Fairhaven only; 15 cents per page)
  • Microfilm equipment with capability to download, export, or print (Central only)
  • Scanners that can scan to a USB flash drive (Central only)

Please note that you cannot save or download any files directly to a library’s hard drive. If you need to save a file, please see these instructions for several file-saving options.

Internet Access

  • Visitors with a Bellingham Public Library card or Whatcom County Library System card may use a computer with internet access for up to 120 minutes a day.
  • Visitors without a library card may use a guest pass.
  • You can reserve a computer up to a week in advance by using the Internet Reservation stations at the Central Library and Fairhaven branch, or by asking staff at the Help Desks.
  • Internet users must observe the library’s Guidelines for Computer Use and Internet Use Policy.

Wireless Internet Access (Wi-Fi)

We are pleased to offer wireless access in all library buildings through the City of Bellingham’s wireless network.

  • Not guaranteed to be secure (use at own risk)
  • The library cannot guarantee speed or quality of the City of Bellingham’s wireless network.
  • The wireless network cannot be used for illegal purposes; for the distribution of materials using peer-to-peer applications; nor in any other way that violates the library’s Internet Use PolicyRules of Conduct, or other applicable library or City policies. Devices used for such activities may be blocked from the network.

To connect to Wi-Fi

Most wireless devices have a utility for discovering and connecting to wireless networks; this is the preferred method.

  • Network name:  COBPUBLIC
  • No password is required
  • After connecting, open a web browser to accept the Terms and Conditions (pictured)

Library staff members are not available to assist with connecting to the wireless network.  You are responsible for configuring your own equipment.

Adaptive Equipment

All Internet computers have a folder on the desktop called Accessibility Tools, which contains the following programs:

  • Magnifier: a display utility that makes the screen more readable for people with low vision.
  • Narrator: a text-to-speech utility for people who are blind or have low vision.
  • On-Screen Keyboard: an accessibility utility that displays a virtual keyboard on the screen that allows people with mobility impairments to type data by using a pointing device.

Patrons with sight or hearing impairments may use the following at the Central Library:

  • D-Link Videophone: allows patrons to use sign language to communicate with videophone relay operators, local agencies, friends, and family
  • Closed Circuit Television magnifier (CCTV)

Microfilm

The Central Library offers microfilm equipment with viewing, printing, and exporting capabilities. The microfilm equipment can be reserved for two hours of use per day. You can reserve a time
