Library to close on Sundays beginning December 14, 2025

Dear Library Community,

I want to share an important update about our library hours and the steps we’re taking to ensure our services remain strong and sustainable. Beginning Sunday, December 14, pending final adoption of the 2026 City of Bellingham budget, all Bellingham Public Library locations will be closed on Sundays. This decision was not made lightly. We know that Sundays are a valued time for many in our community to visit the library—to study, read, gather, and connect—and we understand the profound impact this change will have.

Like many cities, Bellingham is facing significant budget challenges. Our City leadership and City Council are working diligently to address these pressures while maintaining essential services across the community. The Library has been carefully balancing our commitment to public access with our responsibility to operate safely and sustainably, especially amid ongoing staff vacancies. While earlier reports suggested that Sunday closures might begin in January or later, our staffing transitions require us to adjust our schedule sooner so we can manage resources responsibly. We’re grateful for your understanding and continued support as we make these difficult but necessary adjustments.

We remain committed to transparency, care, and connection as we adapt to these changes together. Our libraries will continue to be welcoming, vibrant spaces throughout the week and on Saturdays, filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and build community. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to sustain the library services that matter so deeply to Bellingham.

With appreciation,
Rebecca Judd
Library Director
