Is the Bellingham Central Library currently open?

Yes, the Bellingham Central Library is open regular hours.

Why is the Central Library planning to close temporarily?

Bellingham Public Library is moving forward with Phase 2 of the Central Library interior renovation project, an important step in updating the building to meet the needs of today’s community.

When is the Central Library planning to close for construction?

The nearly 75-year-old library will close to the public during construction, expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027 and continue through late 2027. The Central Library is currently open regular hours until construction begins.

How long will the Central Library be closed?

Once construction begins, our current working estimate is that it could take up to 12 months.

Why do you need to close the whole library?

The most cost-effective and safe way to complete the work is to close the Central Library during construction.

What is the scope and budget of the renovation project?

The renovation will touch all three floors of the Central Library, especially focusing on: children’s and teen spaces, safe and welcoming spaces, staff work areas. The current budget is $8.5 million.

How will I get my books during the renovation?

During construction, library services and expanded hours will be available at Bellingham Public Library’s additional three branches, including Bellis Fair, Barkley and Fairhaven branches.

Private donations of all sizes are being accepted through Whatcom Community Foundation for the Bellingham Central Library Phase 2 Renovation Project.
